Drawing comparisons to God of War 2018, an observant fan sees similarities between the upcoming Ragnarok and the classic animation Shrek.
Continuing a trend from the previous title, God of War: Ragnarok fans have pieced together more than a half-dozen screenshots from Shrek and the God of War: Ragnarok trailer that draws a striking resemblance.
Released in 2018, God of War was the sequel to the earlier hack-and-slash series, receiving universal acclaim after beating Red Dead Redemption 2 to win Game of the Year at The Game Awards. One of the most famous elements was its narrative, the transformation of Kratos from a bitter and stubborn god-butcher into a bitter and stubborn father. With Christopher Judge lending his powerful voice to this complex iteration of Kratos, God of War tells a deeply emotional tale of a broken man’s struggles, failures, and learning to be a parent who has lost his son. was required. Even at the time, parallels were drawn between this journey and Shrek’s films.
In a Reddit post by u/head-of-the-table, he expressed disbelief at the similarities that exist between the two different entities of entertainment. Of the 8 comparisons provided, Kratos and Shrek can be seen in nearly identical poses looking down towards the ground, as well as two other characters, Atreus and Prince Arthur being punished respectively. As Shrek sees a deteriorating flower, Kratos looks at his war-torn Leviathan axe. Comments joked about art imitating art, saying that Shrek is “the blueprint for all media”, with some claiming that if Ragnarok is just a Shrek story, gamers shouldn’t need to worry about quality. Is.
Admittedly far-fetched, it is amusing to consider the ridiculous theory and attempt to make it plausible. For example, just as Shrek didn’t want Donkey to prick who he was, the bandages wrapped around Kratos’ forearm are layers of onions that Atreus slowly peels back. Furthermore, although Norse mythology suggests that Atreus is the father of the world serpent, that may have been derived when the donkey crossbreed with his stern wife, producing offspring that breathed fire. Unfortunately, these connections are nothing more than fan fiction and God of War likely took no cues from Shrek, which is pretty disappointing for any crossover streamer.
Simultaneously, the commentary that hints at Shrek being a narrative basis for many modern stories takes precedence. Shrek revolves around a number of literary tropes but turns them upside down to declare it to be a great animation. With the PS5 bundle announced for God of War Ragnarok, gamers don’t have long to wait to find out just how much the highly anticipated sequel will look like one of DreamWorks’ best.
